International Research Funding

The Department of Statistical Science aims to promote internationalization of research leveraging on the different funding opportunities offered in the framework of European funding programmes.

The University International Research Office provides support to professors and researchers in the elaboration and submission of research projects thought a dedicated team of experts via the EU Research Hub @Unipd.

This page provides an overview of the main research funding opportunities that can be relevant for the Department of Statistical Science.

  European Research Council (ERC)

  • The ERC supports high-risk research projects led by Principal Investigators (PIs) with internationally recognized track records. The projects are funded based on the research ideas presented by the researchers, in any field of science, without predefined research topics, and evaluated solely on the criterion of scientific excellence.
  • ERC calls are published on yearly basis on the ERC website and on the EU Funding & Tenders Portal. Three different type of calls, published with different timing, are offered depending on the seniority of the PI:
    • ERC Starting Grant for promising early-career researchers with 2 to 7 years of experience after PhD
    • ERC Consolidator Grant for excellent researchers with 7 to 12 years of experience after PhD
    • ERC Advanced Grant for established research leader with a recognized track-record of achievements
  • The University of Padua offers a University program called Talent@Unipd which is dedicated to the scouting potential ERC candidates who choose the University of Padua as their Host Institution.
  • In order to boost the participation of the University in ERC calls, the University of Padova has set up a specific programme called Stars@Unipd which runs every two years.

  MSCA Postdoctoral Fellowship

  • The MSCA Postdoctoral Fellowships are one of the actions through which the European Commission financially supports the international mobility of experienced researchers (i.e., with a PhD) within European countries or between a European country and a country outside Europe. MSC fellows carry out their research project in collaboration with a host institution, which is indicated at the time of the application. The Department of Statistical Sciences encourages the submission of applications for MSCA-PF calls by young researchers who choose the Department as their Host Institution. The calls are published annually on MSCA website and on the EU Funding & Tenders Portal.
  • Every year the University of Padua organizes the intensive training course MSCA MARaThon@Unipd Call – MAster your Research and Training Needsdedicated to international post-doctoral researchers who wish to apply for the Horizon Europe Marie Sklodowska-Curie Postdoctoral Fellowships Call and select the University of Padua as their host institution.
  • Outstanding candidates who are not funded but receive the Seal of Excellence may apply for alternative funding under the MSCA Seal of Excellence@University of Padova programme.

  MSCA Doctoral Networks

  • Doctoral Networks are one of the funding lines under MSCA Action funded by Horizon Europe. The objective is to implement doctoral programmes by partnerships of organizations from different sectors across Europe and beyond to train highly skilled doctoral candidates. The calls are published annually on MSCA website and on the EU Funding & Tenders Portal.

  Horizon Europe Collaborative grants

  • The Horizon Europe 'Global Challenges and Industrial Competitiveness' Pillar is characterized by a top-down approach open to collaborative research. Proposals can be submitted by consortia composed of at least three independent legal entities (e.g., universities, research organizations, SMEs, start-ups, industrial partners, or individuals) established in three different Member States or Associated Countries. The calls are published with a frequency that depends on the specific work programmes on the EU Funding & Tenders Portal.
